Plastic Surgery Statistics in 2015 – a brief overview

In July 26 of the present year (2016), the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) posted their semester press release following the Global Survey Report on the growth of cosmetic and aesthetic procedures in the preceding year (2015). The report highlighted the key finding –the number of procedures increased over a million – in just that year (2015).

For this survey – over 35,000 plastic surgeons were contacted world-wide. The ISAPS in the only organization that has done such a wide covering survey, other official entities has performed other interesting surveys, but on regional or at most national scale.

Top Surgical Procedures in 2015

ISAPS - surgical procedures 2015

The top 4 cosmetic / aesthetic procedures remained the same ones of (2014), but there were variations in the rank. Breast Augmentation (#1) is now the most popular procedure – with almost 1.49 million breast enhancements done by the surveyed doctors during 2015. Liposuction lost the number its spot, to the Breast surgeries, and now follows close behind. During 2015, Liposuction was performed close to 1.4 million times in the world. The interesting fact here is that – while the increase in Lipo procedures was only 1.6%, the Breast augmentations increased much more – 10.4%.

The highest drop however was for Eyelid surgeries. In 2014 (1.427.451) Eyelid Surgeries were performed – at that time it was the #1 surgical procedure. In (2105) doctors the demand for eyelid surgeries decreased by 11.4 %, – the drop from 1.42 million t o 1.26 hasn’t been justified yet by the ISAPS.

Abdominoplasties – in #4 – had an incredible year (2015). An increase of over 11% in demand – had doctors worldwide performing close to 760k abdominoplasties (Tummy tucks).

Top Non-Surgical Procedures in 2015

Here the ISAPS reports 5 top non-surgical treatments. The number #1 procedure, by large numbers, still is the Botox injections. Although Botox procedures suffered a 4.2% drop in the numbers, it is still by far the most demanded and performed procedure. In 2015 – over 4.6 million Botox treatments were registered by the surveyed physicians.  Hyaluronic Acid, the most popular substance used to treat wrinkles, was used worldwide in over 2.8 million interventions – and increased by 6.5 compared to the previous period. Two new treatments show in the statistics for 2015, Photo rejuvenation and Non-Surgical Fat reduction. These two types of procedures were trends in 2015 – a year in which their raise in popularity was tremendous.

Dominating Countries

The country with the highest number of procedures is the United States with 1.4 million surgical and 2.6 million non-surgical procedures. Brazil reported 1.2 million surgical and 1.1 million non-surgical procedures. Continuing the rank for the most cosmetic interventions are South Korea, India, Mexico, Germany, Colombia, France, and Italy. The United States has the largest number of active plastic surgery physicians with 6,500 followed by Brazil with 5,500 and China with 2,800. Numbers by country are evidenced in the report; however, some countries did not provide required updates this year

National US Statistics – Comparing the numbers to the ASPS

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons report “2015 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report”, shows similar result. Although the ASPS report only surveyed US plastic surgeons, there is no much difference in the order in the top surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Surgical (invasive) procedures in the US

As the worldwide results show – the national top 2 procedures are also Breast Augmentation and Liposuction. US surgeons saw an small increase of 5% for their liposuction patients, while the demand for breast enhancement procedures dropped a 2% which can be within the margin of error. For American patients – Nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty) comes as the 3rd most wanted procedure. In 2015 almost 218k nose cosmetic corrections were performed in north America – no noticeable change to the year before. Top 4 and 5 were eyelid surgeries (Blepharoplasties) and Tummy Tucks (Abdominoplasties), the usual patients of these procedures are mostly women in their late 30s starting their 40s.

Minimally invasive Procedures in the US

2015 top five cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures

There is no more consolidated number 1, than Botox injections. It has been and still is the most demanded cosmetic service for patients seeking to enhance their appearance. With almost no variation in the demand, compared to the year before (2014), Botox dominates absolutely the charts of noninvasive procedures. Over 6.7 Million interventions were reported by US physicians in 2015. The number 2 minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in the US during 2015 was the use of Soft Tissue Fillers – to correct wrinkles and lines in the face. Rounding up the list of procedures that correct the signs of aging in the face are the chemical peels. The 4th most popular cosmetic procedure is the removal of unwanted hair using lase. With just a bit more than 1.1 interventions, there was mostly no change between 2014 and 2015.

Breast reduction – 40% male patients

Of the reported 68 thousand patients in the US in 2015, 40% were men. About 27k breast reduction procedures were performed on male patients. Men seek to reduce excess fat or glandular tissue, mostly because they embarrassed by having chests of female appearance. The surgery to reduce the breast size in men is known as Gynecomastia correction.

Brazilian Butt Lift – an unstoppable trend

Procedures focused on enhancing the looks of the buttocks, were the fastest growing ones. On average every 30 minutes, physicians performed a butt reshaping. Butt augmentations with fat transfer (more popular known as Brazilian Butt Lifts) – increased by a 24% (14 thousand procedures). Although Buttocks implants are less demanded that augmentations by using the own patient’s fat, there was a 36% increase in their demand.
